About the Event from wpaccessibility.day:

“WordPress Accessibility Day is a 24-hour global event dedicated to promoting and learning website accessibility best practices for WordPress websites.”

WordPress Accessibility Day is a nonprofit event organized by members of the core WordPress Accessibility Team and other community members. It is a free event that is open to everyone who would like to know more about web accessibility.  Their site states “Our mission is to demystify website accessibility for WordPress developers, designers, content creators, and users so that they can build websites that work for everyone. Learn more about the event.”

The event is happening this year on November 2-3. The event will be 24 hours. It is “dedicated to promoting and learning website accessibility best practices for WordPress websites.” There will be over 20 speakers that you can get to know before the event here.  An important thing to know is just because the focus is on WordPress does not mean that developers in other communities cannot benefit from this as well! The WP Accessibility Day Site lists all of those who benefit from accessibility on the web as persons who may experience the following:

  • blindness or visual impairments,
  • deafness or hearing loss,
  • motor challenges ranging from loss of a limb to quadriplegia to the tremors and arthritis that are common as people age,
  • cognitive disabilities related to conditions people are born with or traumatic brain injuries that happen later in life,
  • epilepsy,
  • motion sickness,
  • reading difficulties such as dyslexia,
  • and more…

If you are someone who creates websites, no matter what stack or software you use, this is something that you should strive to take care of for all your clients.

The event will have live captioning and American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for those who need it.  The recordings will also be available on the WP Accessibility Day YouTube channel for those who may have to miss it.

I could not be more excited also to announce I get to be one of the volunteers helping this year! The WP accessibility team has been tirelessly working to ensure this event is as educational and inclusive as possible. We have to show up and support them not only because of their hard work but because we can only build a better web for all, together.
